Sonic Corporation, formerly known as Sonic Drive-In and now known simply as Sonic (stylized as SONIC) or “The Drive-In,” is an American drive-in fast food restaurant brand owned by Inspire Brands, which also owns Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. There will be 3,550 Sonic restaurants across 46 states by 2022. Sonic was placed 14th in QSR Magazine’s top 50 quick-service and fast-casual restaurant brands in the United States in 2020. The company, which is known for using carhops on roller skates, has an annual competition (in most areas) to choose the best skating carhop in the system. In Shawnee, Oklahoma, the prototype of the first SONIC® Drive-In® opened in 1953. SONIC changed the ordering procedure at the time by utilizing curbside speakers that allowed customers to make meal orders without ever having to leave their vehicles. The slogan for this technology was “Service at the Speed of SoundTM,” which can be summed up in one word: SONIC. In 1959, Troy Smith Sr. correctly renamed the drive-in from Top Hat to SONIC Drive-In. SONIC has a vibrant history and specializes in fresh, made-to-order cuisine that you won’t find anyplace else. SONIC’s menu is distinctive, as are the 3 million people who visit our drive-ins every day.
